The Cotswolds are easily accessible with the Great Western railway running directly through the area from London to the South-West. There are also plenty of coaches such as the Oxford Tube and buses that regularly travel through the locations, making visiting the Cotswolds easy.
If you’re considering visiting one of the most beautiful regions in England, then The Cotswolds is the perfect place. The region is spread across several counties in the South-West of England and is set amongst the green rolling hills of the Cotswold hills. It is charming and beautiful British countryside that is the greatest example of true English heritage.
Cotswold Market Towns
Most of the year round, hanging flower baskets are colourful specks along the honey-coloured stone of Cotswold market towns. In the summer, the locals look after the Cotswold stone flower beds that embellish the town with brightly coloured flowers. Cotswold market towns are the typically picture-perfect postcard images of true Cotswold life. Pretty market squares run weekly markets overlooked by their majestic town halls that stand as the landmark of the square. Stunning Cotswold stone buildings line the streets and many Cotswold market towns are worth visiting just to soak up their peaceful tranquillity. Cotswold market towns include Woodstock, Burford, Moreton-in-Marsh, Stow-on-the-Wold, Chipping Norton and Bourton-on-the-Water. Wherever you go, there are interesting attractions alongside pretty streets, quirky boutiques and gift shops. Every town has ample cafes, restaurants, pubs and hotels. The Cotswold market towns were major contributors towards the English wool trade from the 14th to the 16th Century before the cloth trade moved to the North. Although many farmers still have sheep, the Cotswold market towns have remained unspoilt since the industrial revolution and are still a true representative of stunning English countryside.
Cheltenham and Oxford
Approximately 40 miles West of Oxford is Cheltenham, where the famous Cheltenham Racecourse hold the annual Gold Cup horse racing event. Cheltenham is alarge town with several upmarket areas such as the beautiful Montpellier where the Queen’s Hotel overlooks manicured public gardens in the park. There is a massive selection of shops in the town centre, including several shopping arcades and out of town retail parks. Oxford is the nearest city in the region to London with quick access from central London to Oxford, whether you prefer coach or train. Oxford is famous for Oxford University, one of the most academic universities in England. This stunning city is located alongside the River Thames, with a busy city centre that offers a varied shopping experience with plenty of high quality restaurants, bars, cafes and pubs. Cheltenham and Oxford are just a few of the enjoyable large towns or cities in the area, but it’s worth taking the time to explore further afield, in the depths of the Cotswolds hills.
